HISTORICAL ASPECTS FOR THE EMERGENCE OF HARYANA AS A STATE

The origin of the demand of Haryana State can be visualised in its historical perspective. Due to emotional participation in the Ist war of Independence by the Haryanvis, a spirit of vengeance was smouldering in the hearts of the British rulers. Hence Haryana region was tagged with the Punjab in 1858 as a political punishment to the people of this region. “Of course, it was their political isolation but they were still more related socially and culturally to the people of Delhi and the Western U.P.1”.

They had lost political boundaries but they maintained the cultural ties of Roti and Beti. Perhaps, it was due to the repressive policy of the British Government that no significant development was made in the region in the sphere of education, trades, industry, means of communication and irrigation. Consequently it remained backward socially, educationally, economically and politically throughout the 19th century.

With the change of capital from Calcutta to Delhi on December 12,1911, the Haryana region was further isolated. In 1920, certain changes in Delhi district were suggested. The Muslim League also suggested the extention of the boundaries of Delhi with the inclusion of Agra, Meerut and Ambala Division in it. A similar demand was made to Sir.J.P. Thomson, the Commissioner of Delhi by the people.

In 1928, all parties conference at Delhi again made a demand for extention of the boundaries of Delhi. Some prominent leaders of Haryana like Pt. Neki Ram Sharma, Lala Desbandhu Gupta and Sri Ram Sharma met Gandhi ji and requested him that the districts of Haryana region be merged with Delhi.

ART & CULTURE OF HARYANA

Haryana has emerged through the ravages of times and has still managed to hold on to many of its traditions- some good and some not so good. The people of Haryana strictly adhere to their customs and cultural traditions. Yoga and chanting of Vedic mantras have become an innate part of their lifestyle.

The dialect of Haryana, popularly known as Haryanvi, Bangaru or Jatu; is known to be a bit crude but is full of earthy humour and straightforwardness. Most of the people of Haryana have more or less equal social status. The factor of age is a really dominating trait in Haryana, as all elders, whether rich or poor are treated with utmost respect and honour.

INDUSTRY

Haryana is among the northern most state in India and adjacent to Delhi, the national capital of India. It is surrounded by Uttar Pradesh in the east, Punjab in the west, Himachal Pradesh in the north, and Rajasthan in the south.

The state surrounds the national capital city, New Delhi, from three sides. Historically an agrarian state, Haryana today is a well-developed industrial state. The state is one of India’s largest automobile hubs and accounts for two-thirds passenger cars, 50% tractors and 60% motorcycles manufactured in the country. The state has also emerged as a base for the knowledge industry, including IT and biotechnology. Haryana is the third-largest exporter of software and one of the preferred destinations for IT/ITeS facilities.

REPUBLIC DAY

HARYANA is one of the leading states in sports also. During the 33rd National games held in Assam in 2007, Haryana stood 4th in the nation with a medal tally of 80, including 30 Gold, 22 Silver and 28 Bronze medals.

In sports team, HARYANA is the national champion in Women’s hockey and Men’s Volleyball. HARYANA is a traditional powerhouse in games like kho-kho, judo, kabbadi, boxing and wrestling. Sports in the state are managed by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, HARYANA .

SPORTS

What Makes Haryana Consistently Produce Elite Athletes

Haryana is now popularly considered the sports nursery of India. The majority of the sports medals on an international level in India come from the country’s northern state. In the 2018 Gold Coast commonwealth games, India won 66 awards, and 22 belonged to the players from Haryana state.

With a population of just over 25million, it’s amazing to see the growing influence of Haryana in Indian sports. Be it cricket, hockey, badminton, shooting, athletics, wrestling or boxing, every year we come across new names and faces from the state with enough talent and drive to make their mark internationally.
